Early Life and Family Background
Dr. A. Velumani was born on 12 April 1959 in Appanaickenpatti Pudur, a village near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. He was raised in a financially poor family in which his father was a landless farmer and to support the family his mother sold buffalo milk. Life was quite tough with less than ₹50 a week for the whole family of six, and as the firstborn among his three brothers, he took up such works as plucking cotton to make some money.

He went to a government school which was dependent on the mid-day meal program for the nourishment of children. Instead of succumbing to defeat, he perceived this failure as his opportunity and went to Mumbai in 1982. He had an interview there and got a job as a Scientific Assistant in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), which was his first step into the scientific field.
On top of his full-time job, he was still committed to his education and he earned a Master’s degree in Biochemistry and later a Ph.D. in Thyroid Biochemistry from the University of Mumbai.
