Welcome to the blog of Holly Dental Care, where we exercise our mission to provide the people of Holly, MI with up to date information on modern dentistry and related topics.
We want to make sure you have the best information so that you can be confident when making decisions about your oral hygiene and dental care.
In our last blog we wrote about the many health benefits of eating foods that are high in dietary fiber. Multiple studies have shown that dietary fiber helps to prevent heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. It is also effective at treating the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other digestive ailments.
Dietary fiber is also very good at protecting your mouth from the ravages of tooth decay and gum disease. Chewing foods that are high in fiber stimulate the production of saliva in your mouth. Saliva helps keep your teeth free of food particles, while it fights decay causing bacteria with its natural antibacterial properties.
Eating foods that are high in fiber helps to protect your teeth, and to eat high fiber foods you have to have a strong set of teeth. So, what does this mean for those who want to eat healthy foods, but already have missing teeth, or teeth that are weakened and sensitive due to decay? Or they just out of luck?
Not at all.
With modern dentistry there are a variety of tooth replacement options. Even if you have several missing teeth, which greatly limits your ability to chew healthy foods, you can restore your oral health with a state of the art tooth replacement.
Dental implants will give you all the functionality of a natural tooth, and look just as good. Unlike other tooth replacements that just simulate the tooth above the gumline, dental implants replace your root, as well. A post made of surgical metal, usually titanium, will be implanted into jaw where your living bone will fuse with the titanium post. This will become your new root, which is what makes dental implants the closest you can get to growing a new tooth. A realistic dental crown will be attach to the implant and you will have a synthetic tooth so natural looking, no will be able to tell the difference.
Dental implants will give you complete freedom to eat the foods you want to eat, ideally healthy ones with lots of dietary fiber and other valuable nutrients. And unlike dentures, there is no special cleaning or maintenance. You simply brush and floss, just like with natural teeth.
Dentures are not the ideal tooth replacement solution because they rely on suction and unpleasant dental adhesive to stay in place. Unfortunately, these things are not incredibly effective, and as result, dentures have a habit of slipping out at inconvenient times. However, a set of dentures anchored by mini-implants are secure enough to give you the freedom to eat what you choose with worrying about your dentures coming loose.
Mini-implants work much in the same way as full sized implants, but they half the size. Because of their small size, mini-implants can be used in areas of low bone density. Also the placement of the mini-implants is a much less invasive procedure that does not require an oral surgeon. We can place them right here in our Holly, MI office in one visit.
Mini-implants will secure your dentures firmly enough that you will have no trouble eat healthy foods and talking without your dentures sliding around inside your mouth.
