Part of being a parent is knowing that this little being in front of you is preparing to do bigger and greater things tomorrow. Every day is a preparation of things to come, and the same rings true for that smile you adore. From the first tooth that appeared through those gums, your child is preparing for their adult smile. That means to you have an important job to do to protect that smile!
Some people treat baby teeth dismissively. They don’t want to spend much time worrying about those little teeth because they aren’t going to last. What people often forget is that those baby teeth are paving the way for adult teeth. If the baby teeth don’t do their job, the adult teeth won’t be able to step in as they should. For example, baby teeth hold the place of permanent teeth. If a baby tooth falls out too soon, the other baby teeth will shift into the empty space, leaving the adult tooth with no path to follow.
Caring For Baby Teeth
The best thing you can do is to just take care of your baby’s teeth! Begin by wiping his gums with a clean cloth during bathtime. Graduate to a finger brush when teeth begin to arrive, and start gently flossing when those teeth begin to touch and form a full smile. Eventually, you’ll move on to a kid’s toothbrush, and your toddler will want to do things his own way! The important thing is that you keep those teeth healthy, and bring your child in for regular visits so we can keep an eye on things.
Don’t underestimate the purpose of those little baby teeth. They have an important role to play in your child’s future smile, so be sure you are doing what you can to keep them healthy and safe.
