Take Care of Your Teeth This Summer, Part Two

  • May 30, 2015

Welcome back to part two of our summer fun blog double-header!

In our last installment we addressed all the dental dangers that come with enjoying the summer in Holly, MI. This time around we are going to focus how to solve the problems summer activities can create.

At Holly Dental Care, we provide a variety of procedures to give you the quality dental you need to stay healthy and looking great.

Chipped or Broken Teeth

Summer fun, like Frisbees and badminton, can leave your teeth all chipped and fragmented. This may not affect the health and functionality of your teeth, but it certainly affects the way they look. It is important to have a smile your are proud of. Smiling is key to successful interpersonal communication, so if you are hiding your smile due to chips and gaps, then you may have difficulties in social and professional situations.

If your smile has become jagged due to accidental chipping, or if you naturally have spaces between your teeth that you would like to cover, the veneers could be just the solution you are looking for.

At Holly Dental Care, we provide porcelain veneers, which are a very lifelike and sturdy cover for your teeth, similar in nature to acrylic fingernails. Porcelain veneers attach to the front of your teeth to cover chips, gaps, and blemishes. A thin layer of your enamel will be removed so that the porcelain veneers can bond to your teeth for a permanent smile repair.

We also offer EZ veneers, as well as Lumineers, which are thin, yet strong, veneers that require little to no enamel removal, are fully reversible, and less costly than porcelain veneers.

Missing Teeth

Serious injuries as a result of summer sports, or severe decay from that barbecue and lemonade, can leave you with gaps in your smile where teeth used to be.

Missing teeth are more than a cosmetic issue, they can also cause trouble for your oral health, as well as your general health. You need your teeth to chew food properly, so if you are missing teeth, chewing becomes difficult. Healthy foods, with lots of protein and fiber, require a lot of chewing, and if chewing is painful or difficult, you will be more likely to avoid food that is good for you.

When you are missing teeth, especially back teeth, you will be more likely to choose foods that are soft and easy to chew. Unfortunately, many of these foods are overly processed and full of sugar and salt, which can cause a host of health problems, including tooth decay.
Aside from the health problems associated with missing teeth, there are some obvious cosmetic ones, as well. There the unsightly gaps in your smile created by missing front teeth, and missing back teeth make your cheeks sink in, aging you prematurely.

Thankfully, you do not have to live with missing teeth. With modern dental implant technology, we can replace your tooth in a manner that is almost like growing a new tooth. A dental implant is a metal post that we place directly into your jawbone. As healing takes place, the post will bond with your bone to form a synthetic root. Then, once the implant has completely healed, a crown will be set onto the post, creating a new tooth, which looks and functions just like a natural tooth.

One issue with dental implants is that they require a healthy jaw with plenty of bone mass to hold the implant. If your jaw has deteriorated due to missing teeth, implants may not viable with invasive bone grafting surgery. However, we now have a less invasive, and less costly alternative to bone grafts, and that is mini-implants.

Mini-implants work in a manner similar to full-sized implants, but they are smaller and less invasive to place. The mini-implants can be placed right here in our Holly office, and a set of dentures can be snapped on immediately, so that you walk out with a new set of teeth in just one visit.
