Today we want to tell you about one of the greatest advances to come along in dentistry for years. There is a procedure out there that can alleviate your dental fear and allow you receive the dental care you need. Imagine being able to relax in the dental chair while you undergo your dental treatments.
Dental fear is one the biggest hurdles we dentists face on a daily basis. There are millions of Americans suffering from dental anxiety, and in many cases, that means those people forego their regular six-month dental visits. There are even some people who avoid the dentist at all cost. When you skip dental visits, you increase your risk of cavities or serious overall health issues like gum disease. You also allow small dental problems to grow into bigger dental problems.
At Holly Dental Care, we work with every patient to ensure they understand their dental treatment and are comfortable. We are not here to make you feel bad about your smile or guilty about the state of your oral health. Quite the opposite, in fact. We want to help you achieve a beautiful, lasting smile that you are proud to show! One way we can help anxious patients get the dental work they need is through dental sedation. Dental sedation comes in different forms, but the goal is to relax you during your dental visits.
Take Back Your Oral Health With Dental Sedation
Our office uses both oral and IV sedation to treat patients with dental fear or those who need substantial dental treatments. Many of our patients who receive dental sedation fall asleep during the treatment. Michigan requires dentists to receive a special certification before rendering sedation. We have completed training and earned a certified to rendered both oral conscious sedation and IV sedation.
Dental sedation can be used for a number of reasons, with the biggest being dental fear. We also can use sedation for patients unable to sit still in the chair; patients with a gag reflex; or patients who need lengthy dental procedures or multiple dental procedures. Oral and IV sedation achieve a similar goal, but the treatments are slightly different in how they are rendered.
Oral sedation is a treatment rendered in pill-form. The medication is taken before your dental visit, and you will have a friend or family member drive you to our office. Once you arrive, you will find yourself in a total state of relaxation and ready to start your dental visit. Our office prefers to use oral sedation for longer treatments because the sedation is very predictable and can last for long periods of time. We’ve also found that oral sedation works wonders for patients who suffer from a gag reflex.
Our IV sedation can achieve a similar outcome of oral sedation, but the treatment is slightly different. For one, it is rendered through an IV and it takes effect immediately. This is a great resource for people who find themselves in a fearful state when they arrive at the office. Like oral sedation, patients who have our IV sedation are able to get the dental work they need.
Both IV and oral sedation are safe procedures that wear off quickly after your dental visit. In many cases, we treat patients with sedation dentistry once or twice and then they no longer need the extra help during their visits.
Overcoming the hurdle of dental fear is a giant leap toward achieving a healthier mouth. When patients no longer fear the dentist, they are more likely to maintain their regular six-month dental cleanings and more likely to have healthy teeth for the rest of their life.
If you struggle with dental fear or find yourself avoiding the dentist at all costs, give us a call and ask about our sedation dentistry. With sedation dentistry, you’ll find that the dentist can be enjoyable and comfortable.
