Your number one job as a parent is to prepare your child for life on their own. You do this through many avenues: teaching manners, encouraging new experiences, teaching independence, and creating healthy habits, among other things. Creating healthy dental habits is another aspect of this puzzle, and the earlier you start, the better off your little one will be! It can be tough, so we put together a list of ideas to make it a little easier on you!
1) Keep Things Fun
Brushing teeth correctly takes years of practice. While your child is learning, keep the experience fun and lighthearted. Maintain a good attitude, and show your child lots of encouragement when the right movements begin to surface!
2) Involve Yourself
No one wants to be stared at while they brush their teeth. Your toddler is no different. Take the pressure off a little bit by grabbing a toothbrush yourself! Use the opportunity to model brushing movements for your child. It’s difficult to understand how to brush those back teeth, but if you can show your little one in your own mouth, things get easier!
3) Use Special Tools
Kids love special tools. Your child might have a special bowl or spoon or cup that makes eating delightful! The same could work for dental care! Take your tot to the store, and let the choosing begin! Allowing your child to select a special toothbrush means that your child will be that much more likely to want to use that toothbrush!
The best way to prepare for this new experience is to know your child. You know what works and what doesn’t work, so set your little one up for success and praise all the good things you see!
