If there is one night above all others for putting little smiles at risk for decay, it is probably Halloween night. We all know that our children will be eating more candy over the next 24 hours than we would like for them to eat in an entire year! In an effort to protect your little one’s smile, we have some tips and tricks for you to try this year.
While you are out and about, make sure your children are drinking plenty of water. This will keep their mouths hydrated so that they produce plenty of bacteria-fighting saliva. It will also rinse sugar from their mouths if they are snacking while you walk!
Always sort your child’s candy before allowing them to eat it. While you are checking for opened wrappers, etc, sort out candies like caramel, taffy, fruit chews, and filled suckers. Put those away for special treats or into a, “Don’t eat” bag. It’s nearly impossible for kids to get sticky residue off of their teeth!
Be sure to help your child floss and brush really well before putting them in bed. Repeat that cleaning in the morning to remove as much candy residue as you possibly can. As they eat their candy throughout the coming days or weeks, be very persistent during their oral hygiene routines.
Of course you want your child to have a great Halloween weekend, so take measures to ensure that their weekend won’t be spoiled by future cavity fillings.
