Dentures Aren’t Enough On Their Own
If you know someone with dentures or you are someone with dentures, then you may already understand their limitations.
Traditional dentures rest over your gums with nothing to keep them in place. Sure, you can use a denture adhesive, but that provide limited benefits that are temporary at best.
Over time, you’ll probably notice that your denture feel looser and less comfortable. That’s because you no longer have roots — or dental implants to replace your roots. Your roots served a vital role in the health of your jawbone.
Whenever you ate, you pressed your roots into your jaw. That created stimulation that encouraged new bone tissue growth. This new growth sustained the shape of your jawbone.
Without roots (or implants), your jaw slowly shrinks since your jaw is not getting the signals to make new tissue. That’s also why patients will dentures to get them refitted or replaced regularly.
If you live in or new Holly, MI, our dentists what you to enjoy the cosmetic benefits of dentures along with the functional benefit of dental implants. You can get those benefits faster with the All-on-4 procedure.
A Brief Overview Of Dental Implants
Before we explain what makes All-on-4 different from other implant placements, we want to share a little bit about why implants were so revolutionary.
Modern dental implants were developed by a Swedish physician, Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark, after an accidental discovery. Dr. Brånemark was doing research on blood circulation, and he had placed titanium cylinders in the leg bones of rabbits. His intention was to remove and reuse the cylinder throughout his study.
Instead, he learned that removing titanium cylinders was difficult. Why? Because the bone bonded directly to the cylinders. We don’t know what happened with Dr. Brånemark’s original plans, but we do know that he used his finding to develop the first modern dental implants. He placed the first set of implants in a patient in 1965.
By replacing the roots of missing teeth, dentists can now do more than just restore the appearance of our patients’ smiles. We can give them back nearly all of their original biting and chewing power.
We have seen how dental implants have improved the quality of life for our patients at Holly Dental Care. Contact us if you want to see what All-on-4 implants could do for you.
The Benefits Of All-On-4
With a typical dental implant procedure, a dentist would place the implants in your jaw. Then you would wait for months for your jaw to heal. Only then could the dentist attach your dentures.
All-on-4 marks a step forward in the implant placement process. You can think of All-on-4 as a way of working smarter, not harder.
It starts with just four dental implants. How these implants are placed makes a big difference. With All-on-4, two implants are placed vertically in the front of your jaw. Two more implants are placed at angles toward the back of your jaw.
This allows you to get the maximum benefit from each. It also allows our dentists to do something that isn’t possible with other implant placement procedures. We can place a temporary set of dentures the same day that you get your dental implants.
That means you won’t have to leave with an “empty” smile, and you will be able to eat some things. As you heal, your bite force will get stronger.
When you are ready, we will place your permanent replacement teeth on your dental implants. Then you will enjoy the full advantages of your All-on-4 implants.
